In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September uprising was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
