The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
