A Number of Injured as Turbulence Impacts Delta Plane into Sydney, Australia
Multiple passengers and crew have been injured when a Delta Airlines flight from LA to Sydney was hit by significant turbulence Friday morning.
The flight, numbered 41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it made its approach and landed at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier informed. A number of the onboard staff sustained injuries.
Emergency medical services reported they evaluated five patients, and transported a trio to the hospital with minor injuries that comprised spinal discomfort and headaches. The injured ranged from their 30s up to the 70s.
This marks the newest example of commercial jets being hit by atmospheric disturbance, with aviation specialists pointing out that shifting climate patterns is a major factor.
On board were nearly 250 travelers and a crew of 15 on the aircraft, the official said, clarifying that the plane arrived "safely" at Sydney Airport at shortly before 7 a.m. on the day in question.
The NSW Ambulance Service indicated they received a call just only 180 seconds before the plane arrived, and ambulances were waiting on the tarmac.
